Male urban commuters who usually cycle for short distance and need to bring their bicycle to some public spaces.
Concept of this design:
Because the target users would bring their bicycles to some public spaces such as public transportations, elevators and their offices, the bicycle's portability and space saving is very important. Through the research, There are mainly two problems for such urban commuters. First, it would be inconvenient for the person who carries a big bicycle to go into a crowded public space such as the buses or the elevators. The person would struggle to either walking through the crowded space or choose a place to stand. Second, it is hard to prevent getting dirty by the bicycle both during their riding and carrying for both the owner of the bicycle and the person standing beside especially in a crowded space. Besides those two main problems, I keep some other considerations in mind include how to improve the folding method to make it faster and easier, the security issue when the owner leaves their bicycle outside without supervising, the movability of the bicycle after being folding, the impact on the speed caused by small wheels, and creating an comfortable riding experience.
The bicycle takes less space after folding. It makes the bicycle easier to be carried and moved into the crowded public environment. As the chain and the gears are inside the body, there is no need to worry about getting dirty when the cyclist is riding it and carrying it. The folding process is inspired by the Swiss Pocket Knife and is easy and fast. Aluminum body and belt chain reduce the weight while retaining the stiffness and its performance. The bicycle has a bigger rear wheel (12" rear wheel, 10" front wheel) so that it reduces the influence of the speed caused by having small wheels. After folding, the bicycle is able to be moved simply by rolling the rear wheel. The angle of the handlebar can be adjusted for the most comfortable riding gesture. Also, the brake paddles can be attached to both side of the loop bar so that the user could choose which side to use. The loop handlebar can also be used as a lock system. The rider can open and close the handlebar simply by opening or close the coded lock that is built in it. After the handlebar is opened and been folded, they can be attached to the body by the magnets inside both on the handlebars and the body. The magnets fix the two parts of the handlebar on the body so that they won't be moved around especially in the crowded spaces. You can see all those features in the feature drawings.
This design aim to solve three problems that were existing on the current cigarette receptacle in Edmonton.
First problem is the cleaning issue. The city government have to melt the door at the bottom of the current cigarette on the body to prevent people from damaging the door to get the cigarette inside. Therefore, the cleaner have to use a vacuum to clean the cigarette from the open top. Because of the rain and snow inside the cigarette, it is impossible to clean the cigarette. Therefore, the new design should have a secure and hard open system so that people are not able to break them. Also, the new receptacle should be easy to clean and weatherproof.
Second problem is that people try to break the back support of the receptacle so that it falls from the pole. The new design should have a better connection system so that the receptacle stays on the pole.
Designed for people live with obesity waiting in the hospital for lone time. The asymmetry design creates different possibilities to arrange the sofa. The arrangement might break the isolation between people waiting in the hospital waiting lounge to enhance the communication between the people sitting next to each other. This design has been chosen for the 5th Canadian Obesity Summit and been presented in the conference held in Banff Hotel in 2017.
The inspiration comes from the bendable plywood. It is also designed as simple as possible. It is formed by three bent plywood. Instead of hiding the gaps of the three pieces, the white lines emphasis the geometry of the construction of the table.

This design is to create a playful user experience with a customized choice of the brightness of the lamp.
The inspiration comes from the National Stadium in Beijing. The challenge of this light design is to reflect the texture of the architecture. Once the light turns on, the shadow around the light expand from the lamp, creates a abstract art on the wall.

Inspiration comes from the moon. The light of the moon changes due to the different position of the earth when it runs between the moon and the sun. I want to apply the same sciences to my light design. I believe that a design should provide emotional pleasure through creative user experiences. My design challenge for the light is how to create emotional pleasure and create poesis.
The front black disk is a cover of the lamp. Once the front disk moves, the light shows. Part of the light is covered by the front disk, the shape of the moon then reveals. Because the users have to move the front disk to let the light comes out, and it reveals the shape of the moon, the lamp creates an emotional experience. Also, the users could change the position of the cover to adjust the brightness of the light. It provides different choices for the users in terms of the shape of the moon and the brightness of the light.
This is a necklace design by Yingnan Qi and me for the Pop up Shop "Built" which was held by Student Design Association of University of Alberta, 2016. All of the 40 neclaces were sold.
